What Does Sustainable Beauty *Actually* Mean?

sustainable beauty, sustainability

You may have heard about sustainable beauty, but what does it refer to? This is a movement encouraging brands and buyers to produce and consume products in a way that doesn’t harm people or the planet. It focuses on three main areas:

Ingredients Many sustainable beauty products use clean ingredients in their formulas. Different from natural, ‘clean’ implies that the ingredients are in no way harmful to people or the planet. This means that even when they make their way down the drain and back into nature, they won’t do any damage.

Packaging The beauty industry is responsible for 120 billion units of plastic waste annually. Yikes! This means that brands who want to be sustainable beauty brands are rethinking their packaging and making it recyclable, decomposable or refillable to avoid contributing to the pollution problem.

Location Have you considered the carbon footprint of your favourite products? Many popular ones are imported from abroad, adding to air pollution. Sustainable beauty is ideally purchased and produced locally and uses locally sourced ingredients. This short journey takes less of a toll on the environment.

In-store initiatives

Another way that the sustainable beauty movement is gaining momentum is through in-store initiatives. There are several brands and franchises – including Edgars! – where you can refill various make-up, skincare and fragrance products.

Some examples of sustainable initiatives include:

  • Having stations where people can have beauty products refilled.

  • Moving to paper or reusable bags instead of plastic ones.

  • Encouraging customers to recycle their empties in stores.

  • Stocking and showcasing local brands so people can support them.
