Shaving is something many men and women do on a regular basis to remove unwanted body and facial hair. Some people like to rock hairy legs and armpits, especially in the cold winter months. That’s totally fine.
Others, however, like to keep these areas fuzz-free year-round. That’s fine, too! Whether you do it often or occasionally, here’s how you can ensure a smooth shave each and every time.
1. Get out a fresh blade
Most people use their razor blades for *way* too long before replacing them. We should only be using them for between five and 10 shaving sessions, tops. After that, the blade becomes dull, which can increase the chances of nicks and cuts. A sharp blade will ensure the cleanest, smoothest shave possible.
2. Exfoliate the area
Before you even bring a blade anywhere near your skin, it’s a good idea to exfoliate the area you’re going to be shaving. This will help to dislodge any ingrown hairs and remove dead skin cells and debris so that your razor glides smoothly. This will minimise your risk of razor rash and irritation.
3. Use a shaving foam
Yes, hair conditioner does work in a pinch, but there’s a reason that shaving foam exists and why it’s a good idea to use it. When the foam stiffens, your hairs are held in an upright position. This helps your razor to get each and every hair when you glide it over your skin.
4. Wash it all off
Once all the hair has been removed and you are satisfied with the results, you should wash the area thoroughly. This is to rinse any loose hairs and remaining shaving foam off. Use a gentle soap or body wash so that you don’t experience any irritation or itching on your freshly shaven skin.
5. Apply a rich lotion
To prevent razor rash and little red bumps from forming, it’s important that you moisturise your skin well after shaving. You can use a nourishing body oil or a rich moisturiser, preferably only delicately perfumed or fragrance-free. This not only keeps your skin healthy, but will also make your legs look even more silky.
