This Is How To Keep Your Lips Pillowy-Soft All Year Round

The eyes might be the windows to the soul, but our lips often get way more attention. This was confirmed by a study that asked people what they noticed first on someone’s dating profile, with 76% of participants saying it was their smile. As such, it’s important not just to keep your pearly whites bright and sparkly, but also to give your lips regular TLC to keep them in good condition.

Fortunately, it doesn’t require an elaborate routine to keep your pout looking and feeling good. Here are three ways to ensure yours is healthy and happy at all times.

1. Scrub them smooth

When it comes to the skin on our faces, DIY scrubs are not recommended. This is because they can cause microtears on the skin, which can lead to accelerated signs of ageing.

The same thing doesn’t, however, apply to our lips, as the skin in this area heals and regenerates more quickly. This is why lip scrubs are safe to use to buff away dead, flakey skin. You can make your own by mixing granulated sugar with petroleum jelly or coconut oil.

2. Pick your products

Our lips can become dry easily, so it’s important to pick products that will lock in and add much-needed moisture. They should be applied regularly throughout the day. At night, use something with a thick, rich feel or a mask.

There are different types of nourishing formulas to choose from, from a regular balm to hydrating and glossy lip oils. Bonus points if your product of choice contains SPF, as the skin on our lips is thinner and more susceptible to sun damage.

3. Up your intake

Having glowing skin starts from the inside. The same applies to your mouth. Keeping your body hydrated by drinking enough water – about eight glasses a day – is the first step in preventing or reversing dry, chapped lips.

It’s also important to eat foods that are known for their nutrients and skin-boosting properties. These include antioxidant-rich items, such as blueberries, spinach, tomatoes and citrus fruit, as well as food rich in omega acids, such as avocado, olive oil, nuts, seeds and oily fish.
