The Surprising Things That Might Be Causing Your Breakouts

There are several things that could be contributing to your breakouts. The first is not using the right skincare products for your skin type. But if your routine is on lock, what else could be a culprit?

Here are five you may not have considered that could be causing your acne.

1. Your bedding

Every night, we sleep with our faces smushed into our pillows. This means they very quickly start gathering a build-up of everything from dead skin cells to old skincare products. This can be transferred onto your skin and cause congestion and acne. Experts recommend changing yours at least once a week, or more if you struggle with pimples.

2. Your towel and facecloth

Many of us are probably guilty of using our towels a smidge longer than we should be before they’re washed. Like bedding, they also develop a build-up of dead skin cells and are also a hotbed for bacteria because of the damp, warm environment. It’s recommended that you switch yours out for a fresh set about every three days.

3. Your diet

While we know that eating a chocolate isn’t going to cause a major acne eruption, our overall diet does play a contributing role in the health and clarity of our skin. You should be eating foods high in antioxidants to fight free-radical damage. Your diet should also include essential fatty acids to keep your complexion moisturised.

4. Your phone

We spend *a lot* of time each day – hours, in fact! – using our phones. The constant touching of our screens means that germs are easily transferred onto the surface. This then comes into contact with the side of your face when you’re taking a call. Gross! Prevent the build-up by wiping your phone screen regularly with a disinfecting wipe.

5. Your sleep schedule

If you are not getting enough sleep, it shows. It’s not called beauty sleep for nothing! We need between seven and nine hours each night to give our bodies time to recharge and for our skin cells to regenerate. Your skin also makes new collagen, which is what it needs to look plump, healthy and radiant.
