In November 2022, Netflix released the series Wednesday – a modern retelling of the Addams Family from the perspective of the melancholy daughter. It was an enormous hit (and not just because of the iconic dance scene, either!).
Since then, it has influenced the beauty space, which has led to the birth of the soft-goth make-up trend.
Goth, but softer
When goth make-up is mentioned, it might bring something very specific to mind.
But the soft-goth make-up trend is a far more pared-down and feminine version of this extreme, dark look and *more* than appropriate for a night on the town. Soft-goth isn’t about creating a black monochromatic look – it includes some colour, which you can choose to suit your outfit.
The key when doing a soft-goth face beat is not to be too heavy-handed with your application. Layers should be sheer and diffused rather than solid and pigmented. This applies to your foundation, your eyeshadow and your lip colour. Decide if you want to bring colour into your eye or lip make-up and keep the other more neutral. Avoid adding too much colour to your cheeks. Instead, add some contour to give them a more hollow appearance.
Soft-goth make-up is set to be one of 2023’s biggest beauty trends (especially since a second season of Wednesday is confirmed to be in the works). If you’re looking to bring all the drama to your looks this year, it might be time to come over to the dark side!
