Chemical Versus Mineral Sunscreen: What’s The Difference?

We know that wearing sunscreen daily is important. And not only in summer, but in the winter months, too! It is one of the most effective ways to delay and minimise signs of ageing and hyperpigmentation, offering the best source of protection against the harsh African sun.

Back in the day, sunscreen formulas were thick, pasty and notoriously difficult to rub in. This also meant that people with darker skin tones would be left with a white cast. Fortunately, things have come a long way and modern formulations are more pleasant to use as well as more inclusive. There are also different types of sunscreens to choose from, namely chemical or mineral. They both offer great sun protection but work in different ways. Here’s what’s different about them so you can make the best pick for you.

Mineral sunscreen

Also often referred to as physical sunscreen, these are most closely linked to the sunblocks of old because they work the same way. But they have, in recent years, undergone much improvement! When applied, they form a barrier between your skin and the sun’s rays. It could be compared to a shield. For as long as it is on your skin, you are protected. But things like sweating and swimming mean it will require a top-up.

Chemical sunscreen

Sunscreens that rely on chemical filters have become popular with the rise of the K-Beauty movement. They tend to have a more lotion-like texture that’s comfortable to wear, absorbs easily and leaves no white cast. Unlike mineral sunscreens that form a shield, chemical versions act more like a sponge. The active ingredients absorb UV rays before they can cause damage to your skin. They also need topping up throughout the day to remain effective.

Whatever you choose, make sure that you use it daily and reapply every two hours if you are spending time outdoors. Better safe than sorry!
