Whether we’re browsing the internet for new beauty product inspiration or aimlessly scrolling through our social media accounts, our minds consume a lot of information throughout the day. Often we’re gifted with pearls of wisdom, but sometimes we’re hit with useless, made-up facts that contradict what we already know about skincare. We’ve lined up the most common skincare myths and explain exactly why they’re just not true.
Myth #1
You only have to wear SPF in summer
False. Come rain, snow or shine, you need to wear your SPF. It should be a vital step in your daily skincare routine. Harmful UV rays occur even when it’s cold. Sunscreen prevents premature ageing, skin cancer and sunburn.
Myth #2
Eye creams aren’t necessary in a skincare routine
False. The sooner you introduce an eye cream into your skincare routine, the better – especially if you have problem areas you’d like to target, like fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. There are brilliant eye creams and eye serums available containing innovative, active ingredients on the Edgars site.
Myth #3
It’s okay not to cleanse before bedtime
False. Throughout the day, we accumulate various forms of debris on the skin, such as dirt, oil build-up, dead skin cells, etc. If we don’t thoroughly cleanse our skin before we go to sleep, there’s a chance these impurities could form blemishes – and that’s the last thing we want. Rather double cleanse by taking a micellar water to remove your make-up (make-up removal is essential, especially around the eye area) and a separate cleanser to take off anything you might have missed. Cleansing is a crucial part of your skincare that results in healthy-looking skin.
Myth #4
Glowing skin can only be achieved with products
False. Of course there are products, such as serums, exfoliators and masks, that help achieve glowing, radiant skin in a short-term capacity, but your lifestyle plays an important role as well. We suggest pairing your skincare routine with regular exercise each week, consuming fresh, unprocessed food, drinking water daily, not smoking and getting seven to eight hours of sleep in order for your skin to look its absolute best.
Myth #5
Oily skin types don’t need to moisturise
False. All skin types need to moisturise, including oily ones. The purpose of a moisturiser is to act as a barrier for the skin. It helps lock in moisture and protects it against all types of climates. If you have an oily skin type, choose a lightweight gel moisturiser that is oil-free. It’ll keep your skin hydrated without feeling tacky.
Myth #6
Getting rid of pigmentation is impossible
False. There are products available on the Edgars site that target dark spots and pigmentation. Be thorough with your routine and apply your products each day. And wear sunscreen daily to prevent further pigmentation. In severe cases, visit a skincare specialist or dermatologist and chat to them about treatment options.
Myth #7
When a product feels like it’s burning your skin, it’s doing its job
False. A slight stinging, tingly sensation can occur temporarily when using certain products or treatments that contain lactic, salicylic or glycolic acid. For example, during a chemical peel. If the feeling persists and burns the skin, then stop using the product immediately. Burning of the skin could lead to long-term effects, such as barrier damage. The bottom line? Skincare shouldn’t hurt.
Myth #8
You can shrink your pores
False. However, you can minimise their appearance in different ways, like regular cleansing, using retinol and exfoliating. If you love wearing make-up, invest in a primer to apply before your foundation to even out your skin tone and get a flawless, poreless finish.
