How To Build A Fragrance Collection

If you’re a novice to the world of fragrance, and on the fence about whether you should start a collection of scents, consider this your sign to do so. We love how versatile fragrances are and how one scent can smell incredibly unique on various people. Building a collection will take time, effort and saving, but a new scent is the perfect excuse to splurge on one’s self and discover new notes, launches and variants. Here’s how to kick-off your collection…

1. Sample station

The Edgars Beauty Hub team loves samples. If there’s a scent you’ve been eyeing out on the site, visit your nearest Edgars store and ask if they have a sample bottle for you to smell. Spritz it onto clean skin directly (blotters don’t give the most accurate scent reading) and make sure your skin is free from any scented body lotions or other fragrances.

2. EDT vs. EDP

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between these two? EDT stands for eau de toilette. It contains five to 15% of essential perfume oils and lasts between four to seven hours on the skin. EDP, aka eau de parfum, contains a higher concentration of essential perfume oils, normally 10% to 20%, and lasts up to eight hours. Trial both and see which one you prefer.

3. Fragrance Families

There are four main fragrance families: floral, amber, woody and fresh. Learn to discover which fragrances appeal to your nose the most before buying a full-sized bottle for your collection.

4. Store the goods

We know it’s tempting to store your gorgeous fragrance collection on your sunny shelf, but that’s the last place you should keep it. The sun has the ability to degrade the scent’s perfume oil, and as a result, your bottle won’t last. Instead, keep your collection in a dark, cool cupboard, where no-one can reach the bottles. If you can keep them in their original boxes, that’s even better.

5. Swapping game

Get in touch with other fragrance enthusiasts and inquire about their collection. Be open-minded to swapping scents and discovering new brands and variants.

6. Choose quality over quantity

We suggest saving and splurging on a fragrance known to have better quality (e.g. longer staying power) rather than purchasing a cheaper fragrance. Make sure your fragrance collection contains high-quality scents.
