How To Restore Your Nails After Wearing Acrylics

Do you love your acrylics? These popular nail extensions were discovered when a dentist broke a nail and wanted to fix it. The material – acrylic – was chosen because it is similar to nails in look, feel and strength. This was all the way back in the 1950s and it wasn’t until the 70s that the liquid and powder versions were created. This revolutionised the manicure industry, as people now didn’t have to wait for their natural nails to grow to sport long ones. Over the last few years, they have made a *major* comeback, along with decorative nail art.

And, while they look great, it turns out that they are not so great for your nail bed. Sigh.

Fake nails, real problem

There’s no denying that a fresh set of well-painted acrylics looks incredible. The problem is that both removal options, either an acetone solution or being filed off, cause damage to your nail bed.

Fortunately, there are ways to care for your nails so they can be restored back to good condition. Here’s how to do it.

TIP #1 Once your tips are off, you’ll see your natural nails have grown underneath. They are, however, probably feeling pretty fragile and feel rough. Trim them down carefully so they can start growing stronger from the beginning again.

TIP #2 While you are trimming your nails, don’t get too creative. Instead of cutting and filing them into a trendy shape, keep them as natural as possible. This also helps them to grow out stronger and grow more quickly – yes, please!

TIP #3 Rubbing your fingers over your nail beds post-manicure removal feels a lot like sandpaper – yuck! This can also be dealt with by using a nail buffer to buff away the rough texture on the surface until it’s smooth again.

TIP #4 The skin around our nails and cuticles is prone to dryness. Prevent this by using hydrating products on a regular basis. This includes massaging in nourishing cuticle oil and applying – and reapplying – hand cream regularly.
