This Is How To Apply Your Serum Like A Dermatologist

No one knows skincare quite like a dermatologist. These skin experts can not only diagnose and treat a host of concerns, but they are a wealth of knowledge when it comes to which products to use and the best way to use them.

When it comes to our serums – arguably one of the most important products in our routines – how you apply them matters. This is how the docs do it.

Apply to damp skin

You might think that your face needs to be 100% dry before you apply your serum. This is fake news! While it’s important to wash your face first, you should just pat it dry so that your skin remains damp.

If your towel is super absorbent, you can dampen your skin again after cleansing by using a hydrating toner or giving yourself a spritz of facial mist. This will improve the absorption of the active ingredients.

Don’t contaminate your products

If you follow any skincare-related social media accounts, you’ve probably seen serum being applied by holding the dispenser on the skin and allowing it to drip down before it gets rubbed in.

While this might look good online, it’s not a good idea to do this as the bacteria from your skin can get onto the dropper and then contaminate your products. Instead, drop some into your palm and press it from your hands onto your face.

Choose the right ingredients

Not all serums work in the same way or treat the same concerns. There are formulas on the market that cater to all common skin problems, including hyperpigmentation, acne and post-acne scarring, inflammation, redness and sensitivity, and also dehydration and dryness.

Look for ingredients that will effectively meet your skin’s needs, such as salicylic acid for breakouts, niacinamide and vitamin C for fading dark spots and hyaluronic acid to keep your complexion hydrated and healthy.
