As the name of this must-have beauty product suggests, foundation is used to create a clean and perfect canvas on which to apply your make-up. It comes in different finishes, from dewy to matte, and can cover discolouration and blemishes to fake your way to flawless skin. There are several different ways to apply foundation, with and without tools, all of which are great in their own way.
Here are three different base application techniques so you can find the one that works for you.
With a brush
The preferred method of make-up artists, using a brush is a good way to blend your foundation. But not just any brush will do.
There are a range of different cosmetic brushes that are designed specifically for applying and blending foundation based on the formula and your desired finish. Use a large, tapered one to apply it evenly and a chubby buffer one to blend for a seamless look.
With a sponge
Beauty sponges really surged in popularity when the brand, beautyblender, launched their iconic egg-shaped ones in 2003.
These should be damp when you use them to ensure even distribution of your base. You can get a perfect look by starting with less product – which you can apply directly to your skin – and blending it in, gradually building up to the coverage you want.
With your fingers
This should go without saying, but it’s important that your hands are *clean* before you start touching your face.
One of the benefits of using your fingers is that the product warms up, making it “melt” into your skin for a natural look. Apply the product to your skin and, using your ring finger, tap – don’t rub! – it onto your skin. This also allows you total control over your coverage.
