When a new year rolls around, many of us decide to make better choices and lead happier lives over the months ahead.
For 2024, why not give your skincare routine a refresh? These are the skincare resolutions to commit to for a clear, healthy complexion this year (and beyond!).
1. Stop picking your skin
Nothing good ever comes from picking at your face. Sure, you might get the instant satisfaction of destroying a whitehead, but it can also make a blemish a lot bigger and more noticeable. It can also transfer dirt from your fingers into the wound, leading to infection. Need more? Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a thing. Don’t do it!
2. Start using a retinoid
Retinoids are forms of vitamin A, which is the only active topical ingredient that has been proven to diminish and prevent signs of ageing. It is also really effective in treating acne and reducing breakouts. If you’ve never used retinol before, start slow and use it once a week, gradually working your way up to allow your skin to become tolerant.
3. Don’t sleep in make-up
We all know that this is a bad idea, but when you’re tired, sometimes it feels impossible to perform your regular routine. You don’t have to, BTW, but it is important to remove your make-up before your head hits the pillow. Invest in make-up remover, micellar water or cleansing wipes to make getting rid of everything a breeze.
4. Apply sunscreen every day
If you still think that sunscreen is only necessary when you are spending time outdoors, it’s time for a fresh outlook for 2024. Our skin is exposed to rays through windows and via our screens too, so it’s crucial to apply – and reapply – daily. Look for a lightweight formula of at least SPF 30 that plays nicely with your make-up.
5. Look after your eyes
For many people, the eye area is one of the first to show signs of ageing. This is because the skin is much thinner and we use our eyes a lot when we express ourselves. As such, it’s important to give your under eyes TLC in the form of nourishing creams and serums to keep them depuffed, hydrated and youthful.
6. Give your skin treats
Going for facials regularly can improve and maintain the condition of your skin. They can, however, be expensive. Give yourself one at home by using a face mask that’s designed with your skin type in mind. This complexion-boosting activity can become part of your self-care ritual as you kick back, relax and allow your mask to do its thing.
