There are few things in life more frustrating than finishing off your beauty look with some lashings of mascara, only to have it smudge all over your face. Sigh. This is a common concern when dealing with this dark, inky make-up product. But it’s one that can be avoided by taking some precautions.
Here are five hacks that will make it easier to apply – without the mess!
Hack #1: Change your wand
Do you find that you don’t have proper control and get product smears on the side of your face? It happens! This is why it’s a good idea to invest in wire-handled disposable make-up wands, which you can then bend so that they are the perfect angle for easier application.
Hack #2: Angle your eyes
This product doesn’t dry immediately – you have to give it a few seconds. During this time, try to angle your eyes downwards. This can help to prevent transfer from your upper lashes onto your brow bone. Using an eyelid primer can also prevent oily eyelids from smudging your look.

Hack #3: Use a tissue
Alternatively, you can use a round cotton facial pad, cut in half. This should be placed under your eyes before applying any of your eye make-up. It prevents your eyeshadow dust from ruining your foundation and also makes it a lot easier to coat your fine bottom lashes.
Hack #4: Consider your formula
There are a couple of reasons for this. If you have oily skin, it is probably a good idea to invest in one that has a waterproof formula. Also, how old is your current tube? They should be replaced every three months. If not, the formula becomes dry and hard to apply (and unhygienic!).
Hack #5: Clean it up
Sometimes, making a mess is unavoidable. If you have smudged your eye make-up because of a sneeze or a scare, don’t stress! Dip a cotton swab in make-up remover or micellar water and gently remove the dark stains. You may then have to touch up the area with concealer.
