PSA: It’s Time To Up Your Sun-Care Game

We dig being outdoors in summer – there’s no denying it – and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen is non-negotiable. But as careful as we are in ensuring we apply sunscreen, sometimes we spend too much time under the harsh rays of the sun. Even if you’ve stocked up on the highest SPF, our skin is still sensitive to UV rays. This can lead to visible signs of premature ageing and skin damage. Therefore your skin needs extra protection in summer. Luckily, the basics are simple – using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which you reapply every two hours, on your face and body. But it’s doesn’t stop there. Whether your concern is what sunscreen to use on your hairy chest or how to tackle sunburn, we’ve got you covered. We chatted to Cape Town dermatologist Dr Dilshaad Asmal and she shared these game-changing sun-care hacks for summer.

Your Go-To Skincare Hacks For Summer

You Should Wear Sunscreen Daily

Sunscreen should be part of your daily grooming routine, says Dr Asmal. “So instead of using a daily moisturiser, switch to a sunscreen,” she says. We like the sound of that – it can work as your moisturiser and sunscreen in one.

Don’t Forget About Your Lips

We might sound over the top, but you should really use a lip balm with a SPF. This Bobbi Brown lip balm with SPF 15 is formulated with wheat germ, avocado and olive oils. It immediately goes to work to protect lips.

Reapply Sunscreen Every Two Hours

It very important to reapply sunscreen every two hours for consistent protection, especially if you’re sweating or swimming, says Dr Asmal. We know this can be a schlep, but your skin will thank you in the long run. Ask Siri to set an alarm for you.

Don’t Forget About Your Scalp

Even though Dr Asmal agrees that the hair is a great defence against the sun, your scalp can still get burned. So she suggests using a sunscreen spray to help protect your strands and scalp from UV rays. It’s easier to apply than a cream and it won’t cause unwanted build-up.

A Sunscreen Gel Will Handle Your Hairy Chest

Dr Asmal says that gel formulations are better for oily complexions and hairy areas. So we suggest skipping the traditional sunscreen lotions and use a sunscreen spray or gel. They’re lightweight and will absorb more quickly into the skin. The best part, it won’t leave your chest hair full of residue.

Make Sure It’s Water Resistant

Whether you’re going for a swim, playing volley ball or biking around town, make sure you’re using a water-resistant sunscreen, says Dr Asmal. After all, most summer activities involve sweating.

Keep your Sunscreen Protected Too

If your sunscreen is left out in the sun for too long, it can cause instability to the formulation, says Dr Asmal. “Keep your sunscreen stored in a cool place, like your backpack or inside your cooler bag.”

Calm Sunburn Immediately

If you weren’t able to prevent a sunburn, take a cool shower or bath to start easing the burning sensation, says Dr Asmal. Then, while your skin is still damp, apply a moisturiser that contains soothing ingredients like vitamins, antioxidants and super fruits.
