It was in 1971 that renowned fashion designer Issey Miyake first hit the runways and caused an instant global sensation. And while his fashion is considered to be one of his greatest legacies, the other has to be the creation of Issey Miyake L’Eau D’Issey eau de parfum in 1992. Because when it launched, it changed the fragrance game forever.
An ode to aqua
Hailing from Japan and known for his East-meets-West fusion approach to design, Miyake was influenced – as many great artists are – by the elements. When he decided to create a fragrance in the early 90s, nature, and especially water, was his inspiration. With fresh aquatic notes blended with florals and foliage, L’Eau D’Issey eau de parfum was an instant hit and popularised oceanic scents.

After the birth of the fragrance, the designer realised that his beloved female scent needed a male counterpart. Three years later, L’Eau D’Issey Pour Homme eau de toilette debuted. Also inspired by water with fresh citrus and woody notes, it soon too acquired cult status within the fragrance world and beyond.

After an illustrious career in fashion and beauty, the talented and revered Issey Miyake passed away in August 2022. But while the founder might be gone, the brand will live on in his memory, continuing to make people look and smell fresh for decades to come.
